Timothy A. Davis

Born and raised in Western Massachusetts, Timothy A. Davis (b. 1980) studied music composition with Thomas Oboe Lee at Boston College (BA, 2002), and earned his Master's degree in composition from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (M.Mus, 2006), studying with Bruce MacCombie. Tim is currently concluding his doctoral work at the University of Iowa, studying under David Gompper.

Tim’s early compositional work was predominantly focused in dance and theatre. In 1999, he was commissioned by the Boston College Dance Organization to write a dance work for solo piano, which he performed live at their spring show. Tim’s largest work as an undergraduate came when he scripted an original musical, "Dating Games," in 2001 that was performed that November in Lyons Hall on the Boston College campus. In addition to writing the script, lyrics, and music of the work, Tim was also forced to step in and perform as one of the leads in the production.

After two years of working in corporate America in Boston, Tim elected to return to his music career, and began his graduate work at the University of Massachusetts in 2004. Several of the works composed while studying with Dr. MacCombie led to early career success. "Conversation" (2004) for woodwind quintet has received multiple performances in New England, while "Angele Dei" (2005) and "Americana" (2006) were selected for performance in the opening concert of the 2007 Midwest Composers Symposium held at Indiana University. "Americana" was performed later that spring in Massachusetts by the Bay Colony Brass. In June of 2007, Tim signed a contract with ERMMedia to record "In Memoriam" (2005, rev. 2008) for symphony orchestra for the latest volume of the "Masterworks of the New Era" series.

Recently, performances of Tim's music have included "In Memoriam" at the 2008 Midwest Composers' Symposium held at University of Iowa in February, "Chants of the Ocean" for tuba and piano, "Perspective" for viola solo, and the original production Timeless Suspension of Dreams, a collaboration of dance, music, and theater departments at the University of Iowa for which Tim wrote the majority of the music. Upcoming projects and performances include "The Terraces of Purgatory" for soprano voice and piano (premiere October 2008), "Lux Aeterna" for 8-part choir (premiere October 2008), "Una Canción Desesperada" for soprano voice and chamber ensemble (premiere December 2008), and "Rivals" for flute and percussion (premiere spring 2009). Current projects anticipated to be completed and premiered by spring 2009 are "String Quartet No. 2" and Tim's doctoral dissertation, a concertino for trumpet and small orchestra.
