Composer Nilo B. Alcala from Lucena City, Philippines is the 2nd-prize winner of the Asian Composers League (ACL) Young Composers Competition held in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel in October, 2004 (‘chuck d’ cheeky chat’ for chamber instruments). His chamber piece “Dancing Delusions” is featured in the CD and DVD recording of the 1st I'mPulse International Music Camp organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation in February 2005.
Alcala graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines College of Music where his teachers were Christine Muyco, Jonas Baes, Ramon Pagayon Santos and Josefino Chino Toledo.
He was also member and resident composer of Asia’s most awarded choir, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, which premiered several of his works in concert tours and international competitions in Asia, United States, and Europe, including a broadcast on Russian state radio (Malaya Nikitskaya Radio Kultura) organized by the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music.
Alcala’s works have been performed by several Asian choirs in international competitions and festivals in China, Korea, Indonesia, France, and Italy.
He is currently taking graduate studies at Syracuse University Setnor School of Music in upstate New York with composers Nicholas Scherzinger, Gregory Mertl, Andrew Waggoner, and Daniel Godfrey., and is recipient of the Billy Joel Fellowship for 2007-2009.
