Jorge Elias Variego is a clarinetist and composer . Born in 1975 in Rosario, Argentina, where he studied in the Pro Musica Institute, and in the School of Music of the National University of Rosario, and in the Law School of that University where he obtained the attorney degree. Studied composition with Dante Grela and Leonardo Balada, and clarinet with Mariano Frogioni and Michael Rusinek.
His compositions have been performed and distinguished by prestigious institutions such as the Lonba Ensemble, Editoriales Discográficas Rosarinas, the Orchestra of the Modern School of Santiago de Chile, the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, the Tosca String Quartet, the “Lago” flutes quartet, “La sociedad de los 5 vientos”, “Calle 6 Contemporary Tango sextet, the “Contemporary Tango Ensemble”, the Chamber Orchestra of Rosario, the Mayo Chamber Orchestra, the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, the Carnegie Mellon Horn Choir, the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic.
Awarded 1st prize in the “Carlos Guastavino” composition contest (Mozarteum Santa Fe, Argentina), 1st prize in the “Jorge Pena Hen” composition contest for youths orchestras (Foundation of Youths Orchestras of Chile), among other distinctions.
Scholar of the Fondo Nacional de las Artes (Argentina), Antorchas Foundation-Fulbright Commission (Argentina), Carnegie Mellon University (USA), Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and Pittsburgh Concert Society (USA).
As a clarinet soloist featured with numerous chamber ensembles, and with the most renown orchestras of Argentina. Also did works in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Opera Theater and the Pittsburgh Opera.
Is a resident artist at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and is completing his Master in Clarinet performance and Composition at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, where he lives with his wife and son.
