John Bilotta was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. His works have been performed in the United States, Canada, and Europe. His one-act opera "Aria da Capo", a setting of the verse comedy by Edna St. Vincent Millay, was a finalist at the New York City Opera. He has received awards for such compositions as "Notes from a Diary" for mixed wind and string quintet. In 2000, he received the Digital Media Arts Award from the California State College Association for his orchestral setting of James Thurber's fable "The Unicorn in the Garden".

His vocal works, particularly the "Renaissance Songs", "Yeats Songs", and "Prayer to Persephone" have been performed at music festivals and concerts in both the United States and Europe. "The Renaissance Songs" were recorded live in Munich in 1993 by the American tenor Gregory Wiest. "The Yeats Songs" were commissioned by the bass-baritone Marvin Lehrman who premiered them in San Francisco. They were subsequently selected for performance at the University of Wisconsin's New Music Festival in Platte. His "Nocturne" for clarinet and piano was premiered in June, 2003, at the New Music North Festival in Ontario.

More recent works include the "Divertimento for Wind Orchestra", the "Madison Sketchbook" for piano, and a series of wind pieces: "Gen'ei no Mai" for flute and clarinet, "Entr'acte" for clarinet solo, "Fire in Spring" a sonata for flute and oboe, and "Shadow Tree", an impromptu for alto flute and guitar. His "Concerto for Wind Quartet and Orchestra" was premiered by the Oakland Civic Orchestra in March, 2005, and subsequently recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic.

His works have been performed and recorded at concerts, festivals, and workshops around the world by such outstanding international soloists, ensembles, and orchestras as Rarescale, the Kiev Philharmonic, Earplay, the Washington Square Contemporary Music Society, and VocalWorks.

His short comic opera Quantum Mechanic was one of the winning operas in the 2007 Opera-in-a-Month Challenge Competition and was premiered at the American Fork City Hall in August, 2007.
