THE MONSTER LICK (Sonata for Clarinet & Piano)
THE MONSTER LICK (Sonata for Clarinet & Piano).mp3 - complete

Charles Ancheta, cl. Nathan Strasser, pno.

Daydream: As I was walking to the grocery store, a spirit came suddenly through the air from many directions, concentrated itself, and surrounded me. Like a ghost, the spirit whispered this melody into my ear, warned of an impending obstacle in my path, and gave me advice on how to confront it. Sure enough, the obstacle, like a monster, faced me soon afterwards. I confronted the obstacle several times and overcame it.

Stylistically, this piece emerges from an integration of contemporary cultures.  It seeks to provide a musical architecture which incorporates the essence shared by the diversities of hip-hop, alternative rock, and the classical sonata. Such cultural intermingling through music is part of what I believe encourages constructive communication between different groups of people and leads to collective gain. I hope to bring new insights to the sanctuary of the modern concert hall and speak to people of all generations.

Seyoung Jeong, piano 1. Cher Siang Tay, piano 2. Jarvis, bass pans. Matt Mantle, drumset.

This music came to me while the sun was down. Just as the moon reflects rays of sunlight, this piece reflects rich musical traditions of the Caribbean Islands. In it you will hear traces of carnival-style soca, calypso, samba, and ragtime rhythms. Listen to the vibrant percussive patterns – parts interlocking to form a whole – designed to cause many to dance.
