Fusun Koksal was born in Turkey. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in theory & composition from Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts studying with Bujor Hoinic, she graduated from “Hochschule fur Musik Koln” where she studied composition with, Prof. Krzysztof Meyer.
Koksal has won the second prize at “III. Internartional Deutsche-Polnische Kompositions Wettbewerb”, Cologne (1998),III Prize at 6ème Concours International de Composition Henri Dutilleux (2008), and she was finalist in, 2nd International Composer's Competition, Reggello, Italy, (2005). She won one of the regional awards of SCI/ Ascap student composition commission consequently from 2006 to 2008. She was recently commissioned by “YOUrope Together” Project, organized by Philharmonie Essen. Her music has been programmed at festivals such as “Young Composers in New Music”, Detmold, “Turkkfest“, London,Toronto Summer Music Festival, Toronto, Forum Neuer Musik, Cologne, June in Buffalo Festival, and has been performed several times in Europe.
Her “Vier Stücke für Streichquartett” has been published by Edition Dohr, Germany. In January 2003 she has been invited for a sabbatical study at the “Sonja Gaze Foundation”, Montreux, Switzerland.
Her musichas been performed by prominent ensembles such as "Arditti String Quartet" ( June 2007), Pacifica Quartet ( May 2007), Eight Blackbird ( May 2006), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s 10:10 Ensemble, Ensemble Fire-Wire, Dafo Quartet, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra(1996), Orchestre Nationale de Lorraine ( 2008, Centre Acanthes) and her music is broadcasted by Deutschlandfunk in April 2007.
After serving three years as Chair of Composition studies at Bilkent University, Faculty of Music and performing Arts, Ankara, she moved to Chicago. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in composition at the University of Chicago, studying with Prof. Marta Ptaszynska and Prof. Shulamit Ran, recipient of "Century Fellowship", "Arts Planning Council Summer Fellowship Award", "Lowell. C. Wadmond Award", University of Chicago, Humanities Travel Grandt from University of Chicago, a bursary from Centre Acanthes to attend composers workshop, a bursary from Toronto Summer Music Festival.
