Eric Malmquist is a young composer who has just moved from his small hometown to live, study, perform and compose in the Chicago area. He has recently received his Bachelor of Music degree in composition from Illinois Wesleyan University, and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in the same field from Roosevelt University. He is also a founding member of the Sissy-Eared Mollycoddles (SEMC) New Music Trio, also based in Chicago, for which he is currently writing music. Finally, he is a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Seven Titans Composition School, whose achievements include the "Seven Wonders of the World" Installation Project in Bloomington, IL.
Eric is originally from Morris, Illinois, a small town in the fields southwest of Chicago. Some notable achievements so far include the composition of a forty minute, four movement Symphony for strings and percussion, for which he was granted Research Honors in Composition at Illinois Wesleyan University. Other compositions have been performed at the John Wesley Powell Research Conference at IWU, Montmorency Junior High in Rock Falls, IL, Merit School of Music in Chicago, and elsewhere.
Recently completed works include two trios for the SEMC, a solo violin score to a short Thomas Edison film (which was recently performed by the New York Miniaturist Ensemble), the first and second madrigals of a set of nine using texts by fellow composer Benjamin Hjertmann, a commissioned song for soprano and two cellos on a text by St. Augustine, a movement in a collaborative setting of the four parts of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Bells," and a miniature opera libretto to be set by Luke Gullickson.
Upcoming compositions include a chamber opera with a libretto by Hjertmann, a string quartet, a set of preludes and inventions for piano, a trio for tenor and percussion on a Greek text by the ancient philosopher Empedocles, a piece for bass trombone and piano, a sonata for guitar and double bass, and more.
Eric's principal teachers include Daron Hagen, David Vayo, Mario Pelusi, and Garrett Byrnes in composition and Judy Hanna in double bass
