SCI Student Chapters
A Message from Nickitas J. Demos, Chair for Student Chapters
It is with great pleasure that I begin my duties as Student Chapter Representative to the SCI Executive Committee. I have had a long association with SCI over years, hosting the 1998 Region IV Conference in Atlanta, serving as Co-Chair of Region IV and for the past eight years, advising the Georgia State University Student Chapter of SCI. I believe strongly in a very healthy and growing base of student composer members within SCI. Nationally, the number of student chapters has grown rapidly in the past few years - a trend I do hope will continue - and with annual national student conferences and the SCI/ASCAP student competition, there are more reasons than ever for composers to join SCI as a student member.
There are many benefits available to all student chapter members of SCI, including submission to regional and national conferences, the SCI CD series and SCI Journal of Scores. Members can create and post their own profile pages, and student chapters are encouraged to do the same. Through participation in these many activities available through SCI, you can make invaluable contacts nationwide, hear music being produced by our colleagues, and take your first steps into your professional careers. In addition to benefits provided by SCI, many student chapters have been able to access funding from their colleges and universities for a variety of projects, including producing concerts, traveling to conferences, bringing in guest artists, and producing compact discs of student chapter members, works.
It is important for me to continue to build upon the excellent work of my predecessors and to expand the growth of SCI student chapters. To that end, it is critical that I hear from you! Let me know what is important to you and what kinds of services and activities will enhance your educational years and best prepare you for success in the field of music composition both inside and outside of the academy. Do you need help in grant writing skills? Help in the production of CDs or promotional materials (including a professional curricular vitae and website)? What are your options for a professional career in composition? I hope that SCI will be the place you turn first as a valuable resource for help in these and many more areas.
Should you have any questions about starting a chapter, ideas for projects, or are interested in hosting a conference, please feel free to contact me anytime.
