SCI Student Chapters
A message from Natalie Williams, Student Chapters Coordinator
The SCI has a long and influential history of supporting student composers. From Student National Conferences, to the annual SCI/ASCAP Student Composer Competition, the organization has established many platforms to encourage and promote the activities of young composers across the country.
I am very humbled and grateful to have recently accepted the position of Student Chapters Coordinator with the SCI. Building on the wonderful work of my predecessors, this role offers a unique opportunity to engage with the large SCI student body. Along with the two other officers in the national student team (Adam Vidiksis, Student Events Coordinator and Carter Rice, National Student Representative) our tasks are to invigorate, grow and expand the scope of student composer activities, supported by the SCI.
Strengthening this national team are the eight Student Regional Representatives (each listed under the “Officers” section of the SCI website). Working together with the national team, the regional representatives will assist with outreach and development tasks to build and support the student cohort within SCI.
We are excited to be working on some new initiatives that will provide even more opportunities for student composer development.
- “Snapshot Conferences” - establishing a series of micro-conferences between composition departments at neighboring schools; providing recital and performance opportunities, score exchanges and networking between performers and peer composers
- Growing the SCI student chapters – the regional representatives will help reach out to schools within each region and encourage participation, networking and interaction between the student chapters
- Regional Mixtapes – through the student representatives, each SCI region is encouraged to create a mixtape of student works. These recordings will be curated into a collection and made available on the SCI website, to promote and highlight the depth and variety of new music being created and performed nationwide
These exciting projects offer a great potential to all student composers for the performance and promotion of their works. In these ways, the SCI can provide a strong professional platform for young composers to build upon as they establish their professional careers.
As always, our greatest ideas come from our members and we would love to hear your thoughts, initiatives, questions and comments. How can the SCI better support you as a young composer? What resources would you like to see made available? If you have a great idea that you would like to see implemented, please let us know.
We are working towards the next SCI Student National Conference (further details to come) and are excited about the growth of the Snapshot Conferences, the Mixtape project and increasing the networks of student composers. Many other opportunities exist. We are all out there doing some great musical things – together, we can shape an invigorated network of creative minds.
I look forward to meeting you all and to working together to promote the dynamic new music of student composers.
