Much of Christopher's inspiration comes from real-life experiences as well as "imaginary-life" experiences. Notable pieces include Learning to Fly (2015), an electronic piece inspired by a bird learning to fly, and Fall1ng Down the Rabbit H2le (2015), a serial, "12-tone" piece for euphonium and electronics inspired by a sudoku puzzle.

Learning to Fly

This piece was composed in the Fall of 2015. The inspiration behind this piece was to compose a piece that emulated bird sounds. The electronic portion behind this was simple to emulate bird sounds; the challenge was to make a euphonium sound like a bird. As the euphonium is a low brass instrument, how does one make it tweet high like a bird? The solution had to be made through electronic manipulation. Even though one can electronically pitch shift the euphonium to sound higher than it sounds, to make it tweet, this piece keeps the euphonium within its register. As the composition was being written, the background tweets began to emulate an ‘electronic aviary’ and the euphonium part began to sound more and more like a bird struggling to learn to fly. Hence the title, Learning to Fly.
