Brent Lawrence is a composer and performing musician residing in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Brent is a multifaceted artist whose works draw from a wide array of genres and traditions. He has recently been commissioned by the North Carolina Brass Band, the Center for Faith and the Arts in Salisbury, NC. and the Sounds of Summer Organ Series of Winston-Salem, NC. In addition to his compositional work, Brent also performs regularly in the blues and jazz genres. A native to Salem, Virginia, Brent began studying violin at six years old after being engrossed in a toy saxophone given to him for his birthday. He would study violin into his early teens when he began to take an interest in guitar. Throughout his later teens, Brent could be seen playing is restaurants and bars around his hometown with local jazz and blues musicians. After graduating from high school, Brent began his studies on guitar a Pfeiffer University. During this time, Brent was given the opportunity to study not only classical guitar, but jazz as well. These experiences served as a strong foundation for him as he began compose music during his later college years. In addition, Brent spent his last two years at Pfeiffer University immersed in the Charlotte, NC blues scene as a professional guitarist. In December 2015, Brent earned his Master of Music in Composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts under the instruction of Dr. Lawrence Dillon. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pfeiffer University in May 2013 where he studied both classical and jazz guitar with Troy Conn. He currently serves as the Director of Contemporary Music at Irving Park United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC and is a co-founder of the Irving Park Forum for the Arts. Additionally, Brent has returned to his alma mater, Pfeiffer University, where he serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Music Department.
